“The herb that does it all.”

Schisandra berry is an adaptogenic herb long used in traditional chinese medicine. Adaptogens help your body adapt to stressors, whether they’re physical, biological or even chemical.  Schisandra is  known as wu wei zi which means five flavors berry. It’s sweet, bitter, pungent, sour, salty at all once and one of the only foods to contain all fives flavours. That little berry packs quite a punch but it’s quite pleasant.

I’ve been using schisandra mostly for liver support and to help clear excess estrogen. It’s this estrogen buildup that fuels cell growth (fibroadenomas, fibroids, cysts, tumors) anywhere in the body for that matter, PMS symptoms, acne, and breast tenderness. You know the deal. I’ve also found it really helpful during hiking trips. Not only does it liven up your water but it also helps with endurance.

Find the herbs that speak to you. There’s a reason why you’re drawn to certain things, whatever they might be. There’s something there for you. This is one herb that I see myself using long term.

Breast Health

  • Reducing excess levels of estrogen helps to maintain healthy menstrual cycles and breast tissue.

  • It also decreases the risk of developing cysts, fibroadenomas and tumors since there isn’t an estrogen increase to stimulate cell growth.

Dose

  • Powder form: 1 tsp – 1 tbsp in water or juice daily

  • When introducing any new, herb, food or supplement into your system start with a small dose and work your way up. Schisandra can be taken as a tincture, in capsules, in powder form, the dried berries can be decocted into a tea, and also be chewed.

  • Pay attention to how your body is feeling about one hour after taking  your dose. This will help you determine your individualized dose.

  • I find the easiest way to consume schisandra is in powder form. You’re also consuming the whole berry which ensures you’re not missing out on any key nutrient and antioxidant.  I add to it to my vegetable juices or water. It’s quite strong in taste and adding it to smoothies or yogurt bowls could overpower the flavors.

Supplement

  • Look for ones that are standardized to the schizandrins, which are active compounds.

TCM Wisdom

  • TCM doctors prescribe that their patients use schisandra for 100 days. Some recommend chewing the berries for the 100 days.
